Historic Clevedon

All Souls Church, Clevedon, taken from the Lychgate

All Souls Church, Clevedon, was built in 1961 by Mr A Cochrane and opened by Bishop Selwyn, who is reputed to have planted the two Norfolk Island Pines in the front yard.  In the early years of the church, the Rev Vicesimus Lush of Howick travelled to Clevedon once a month to take services.

The church was built in the typical Selwyn style of vertical kauri weatherboards and a shingle roof.  The original church was smaller than the present church, but all additions have followed the Selwyn style.

In 1863, at the beginning of the Land Wars, soldiers used the church as accommodation while they built the Galloway redoubt.  Traces of the redoubt can still be seen between the church and the vicarage nearby.

The McNicol Homestead is a fine looking two storey house overlooking the Wairoa River and the Clevedon Valley.  All the kauri used in the construction of the house was milled on the property.

The McNicol family were the first European settlers in the Clevedon area, and this, their second home, was built in 1878 for £320 .  The family first came to the area in 1852, after migrating from the Isle of Arran in Scotland.  A memorial to the family now stands in the park opposwite.  A ha-ha, which is a ditch to prevent stock from getting too close to the house without the use of a fence, is sited in front of the homestead.

The Homestead is currently leased to the Clevedon Historical Society from the Manukau City Council.
