Omana Regional Park
The park takes its name from the well preserved ring ditch pa, O-Manawatere (the dwelling place of Manawatere). Ngai Tai tradition records that this ancestor travelled from his Pacific homeland not by canoe, but by gliding over the water. Take this link for more general information on the Auckland Regional Council's role in protecting our heritage.
By the mid 1840s European settlers were clearing and farming the land in the area. Kauri felled in the Maraetai hills behind Omana was hauled by bullock teams down to the sea and then floated to mills in Auckland.
Omana Park has all the components for a fun family day out. There is the Perimeter Walk - a leisurely 2.5km amble over a boardwalk through mangrove-filled tidal estuaries, open paddocks and native forest. The farm animals are a favourite attraction with the kids. There are numerous picnic areas and barbecue sites scattered about the park and camping is allowed by prior arrangement. At hightide the gently shelved beach is safe for swimming.
