Manukau Gardens, Food & Wine

Gardens, food & wine are three of the defining characteristics of Manukau – making it the perfect New Zealand vacation escape.

Manukau is home to the Auckland Botanic Gardens at Manurewa - where over 10,000 plants from around the world are displayed, spread over 64 hectares in Manurewa, South Auckland.

Another key attraction is the magnificent Villa Maria's Auckland Winery at Mangere.

For those who enjoy walking around an outstanding garden, which featured on the BBC's Monty Don show, Round the World in 80 Gardens, should visit Ayrlies in Whitford.

Manukau is also dotted with other wonderful small gardens, lovingly tended by their owners and open to the public at specified times or by prior arrangement.

Similarly, the area around Clevedon and the Ness Valley is a bursting with boutique vineyards and wineries. Many of these are owned by people who have just fallen in love with the beautiful countryside and set about making it their home and income.

Again, opening times are sometimes restricted, or by prior appointment, so do telephone ahead.

But when you get there, you won't be disappointed - Manukau hospitality is renowned!  Buy a bottle of wine there, pick up some bread and cheese at the local shop and find yourself a peaceful spot for a picnic.

Remember, it is the little things and the people you meet which make a holiday!
